McDonalds makes it billions not only by selling fast food, but by using
its purchasing power to drive down the price of the tomatoes it buys. This
downward pressure hurts farm-workers the hardest: they earn 40 cents for
every 32 pound bucket of tomatoes they pick, about the same rate that
they’ve been earning since the 1970s!
Farm workers organized and won a boycott against Taco Bell in 2005,
earning an extra penny a pound of tomatoes picked, plus oversight in the
fields to prevent abuse and slavery. Now farm workers are demanding
accountability from McDonalds and need community support to win this
battle.
